Humana’s Commitment to Health and Fitness in San Antonio

Most of us are probably familiar with Humana for their insurance — they’re a large, national health insurance company, after all. But, more locally, Humana invests in San Antonians well beyond their healthcare coverage. Through local collaboration and philanthropy, Humana is helping our community get healthier and more fit, moving the needle on our shared goals.

In 2014, Humana convened clinical and community leaders in San Antonio to identify barriers to health and then developed a strategy to help break down those barriers. This year, Humana, in partnership with the ADA and the San Antonio Health Advisory Board Subcommittee members, plans to launch its online diabetes resource guide, a comprehensive list of free or low-cost diabetes resources and programs in San Antonio. This effort could have a direct impact on our goal of reducing our community’s diabetes rate—one that has already seen significant progress through local collaboration. Humana will continue to convene and work with San Antonio leaders to align efforts, with a goal of improving community health 20% by 2020.

Humana also encourages associates to give back to health and fitness organizations. In 2016, over 40% of associates contributed nearly 5,000 volunteer hours and supported several SA2020 Partners: Childsafe, Clarity Child Guidance Center, Haven for Hope, Mayor’s Fitness Council, and the YMCA of Greater San Antonio. Members of Humana leadership also serve on the boards of several local organizations, including San Antonio Sports and the YMCA, both SA2020 Partners. Humana further supports community well-being with their annual giving program, donating $40,000 to The United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County last year.

To offer more opportunities for all San Antonians to get active, Humana sponsors both the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup. Additionally, Humana encourages their associates to be a part of these great events, either as participants or volunteers. Humana promotes healthy living among its associates year-round and implemented their Associates Connection Council, an initiative that focuses on both personal well-being and community involvement.

Humana is a terrific advocate for health, fitness, and service, and we are proud to have them in our corner. When companies like this get involved in our community’s work, San Antonio can do even greater work toward achieving our shared goals.

Humana is a corporate donor to SA2020 and most recently supported our 2016 Impact Report and Luncheon.
