There has been an emphasis in San Antonio on increasing the number of people using alternative transportation — VIA transit and carpooling — since 2010. VIA Transit has focused on several aspects of improving public transit, including increasing accessibility. Keep SA Moving is a voter-approved slate of projects, including Advanced Rapid Transit, designed to improve mobility for all San Antonians. This plan will ultimately help reach the shared goals of increasing alternative transit use and decreasing commute time as more San Antonians have the ability to opt out of single-occupancy vehicles. The Housing and Transportation (H+T®) Affordability Index provides a comprehensive view of household affordability that includes both the cost of housing and the cost of transportation at the neighborhood level. This index shows that the annual transportation costs for households in San Antonio are $13,342 — the second largest expenditure in a household. Increasing access to alternative transit, like VIA Transit, could help lower the annual costs for San Antonians to move around the city.

Workers Who Travel by Carpool and/or Public Transportation
US Census Bureau American Community Survey 1-Yr Estimate, Table S0802
San Antonio
This measure calculates the mode of travel that a worker usually used to get from home to work during the reference week. People who used different means of transportation on different days of the week were asked to specify the one they used most often. People who used more than one means of transportation to get to work each day were asked to report the one used for the longest distance during the work trip.
After 12 years of driving progress toward a shared community vision, SA2020, the nonprofit organization, is dissolving. We believe this is the most visionary thing we can do. We made this decision with the greatest care for our organizational values of leadership, community, and accountability, and we hope you’ll read more about it on our blog.
Our website is live with our final data release, showing where San Antonio stands on reaching the shared community vision. The data release is accompanied by our final call to action—a policy agenda for City government based on our unique bird’s-eye view of San Antonio.
While SA2020’s operations ended March 28, these resources, along with the last twelve years of our research and stories, will be available to download from our website through September 2024.
