The teen birth rate has steadily declined year over year. In 2020, we were unable to calculate the birth rate because the US Census did not release population data due to the COVID-19 crisis. In 2021, Bexar County's teen birth rate decreased, again, by nearly 16% from 2019.
When disaggregated by race, the teen birth rate shows that Black teens and Hispanic teens are twice as likely to give birth than white teens. Healthy Futures of Texas, a statewide nonprofit, reports that the overall decline in Bexar County's teen birth rate can be attributed to the increased accessibility of quality sex education and contraception.
SA2020’s data disaggregated by race requires an understanding of historic and systemic racial inequity. Learn more at SA2020.org/racialequity.
SA2020 uses sex and race identifiers from each source. This means across the indicators you may encounter various ways in which a particular population is identified. SA2020 promotes best practices in collecting demographic data. Review our most recent Recommendations for Collecting Inclusive Demographic Data.
