OHP 5K

Fitness + History = San Antonio’s New 5K Series

The primary mission of the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) is to preserve and protect the unique historic structures, archaeological sites, and design features of San Antonio, most of which exist in the downtown area. Starting in 2016, OHP has found a way to make learning about our city’s historic locations educational, fun, and healthy!

On March 5, 2016, OHP, in partnership with Fleet Feet Sports, is hosting the first of four events in the 2016 SA Preservation 5k Series. This 5k will take place at 9:00am at San Antonio Water Works at 2809 Broadway (Lions Field). The San Antonio River served as the city’s primary water source in the 19th century and many remnants of the water works can be found in and around Brackenridge Park. This tour will explore the history of the River from the Spanish Colonial era to the present day. Runners and walkers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.

OHP 5K Series

In addition to San Antonio Water Works, the 2016 Series will visit other interesting and fun locations, including the Monte Vista area on September 14, Eastside Cemeteries on October 29, and a nighttime tour of downtown’s holiday lights on December 6.

Recognizing and highlighting the value of historic, archaeological and cultural resources within San Antonio is one way in which to encourage their long-term preservation, and unique events like these help to promote the importance of historic preservation in safeguarding the City’s unique heritage and in revitalizing neighborhoods. Data shows that our historic neighborhoods outperform the rest of the City in the areas of walkability, transit scores, proximity to parks, and bikeability. With more people choosing to live, work and play in these neighborhoods, it is leading to increased opportunities for more healthy activities, diversity, and economic growth as historic buildings are attracting more small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Register now for this fun event! Registration fee for each individual SA Preservation 5k is $25 and includes a t-shirt, or you can pay a reduced fee of $10 if you choose not to receive a t-shirt. For those interested in participating in all four 5k events, registration is discounted to $40, including a t-shirt.
