On March 29th, SA2020 teamed up with the Mayor’s Fitness Council (MFC) at Síclovía powered by the YMCA to host a Reclovía to highlight the importance of building community connections to help us reach our SA2020 goals like Health & Fitness.
Síclovía is a free event that closes a major city street for a few hours, creating a place where San Antonio residents can run, ride bikes, walk, and take exercise classes together. Reclovía are destinations along the route that have games for families and individuals, allow residents to join exercise classes like Zumba, giveaway prizes, and help spread positive information about healthy living.
The SA2020/MFC Reclovía focused on “social connectedness.” Social connectedness means that the relationships you build with others in your community actually promote good health, increase public safety and the strength of neighborhoods, and increase civic engagement with activities like volunteering or voting in an election.
Not only does Síclovía help SA residents get healthier, but it also promotes healthy connections to the community. Beyond our basic human need for relationships, participation in civic life is an important component to a thriving community, which is exactly what SA2020 is all about.
At the Social Connectedness Reclovía 29 partner organizations joined us to broaden awareness to the San Antonio community on topics like Health & Wellness, Sustainability, Infrastructure and the Built Environment, and Community Vitality.
Síclovía saw over 55,000 people. Over 1,000 helmets were given away and over 400 trees were adopted. We shared messages about movement, eating, and healthy habits, playing games and handed out tons of prizes.
