The Playhouse Announces 2016 – 2017 Season

The Playhouse San Antonio recently announced their 2016-2017 Season for their two theatre spaces, which includes both large-scale musicals as well as newer and classic works.

The Russell Hill Rogers Theatre, The Playhouse’s ‘main stage’ space, will begin with Beauty and the Beast in September 2016, followed by A Christmas Carol, The Secret Garden, Nine, and Hairspray. Because of its widespread success last holiday season, The Playhouse will once again stage their original adaptation of A Christmas Carol, written by locals Tim Hedgepeth and Anthony Ciaravino, with hopes of it becoming an annual tradition.

In the Cellar Theatre, The Playhouse’s intimate black box-style space, the season will kick off with The Glass Menagerie in October 2016, and will then feature Fool for Love, Disgraced, and Crimes of the Heart. Showcased in the January 2016 installment of Playhouse Potentials, Crimes of the Heart has been selected from that pool to be fully produced; a goal that Potentials aims to accomplish each season. For those unfamiliar, Playhouse Potentials is The Playhouse’s newest artistic program that uses monthly staged readings to showcase newer and lesser-known plays in the Cellar Theater from open community submissions. The series will continue through the ‘16-’17 season, and you can learn more or submit an entry here.

Mia Migliaccio, The Playhouse’s interim President and CEO, says that the goal for the season is to make art accessible to everyone in the community. “With the value of art increasing in San Antonio, we make every attempt at providing programming for people of all ages and walks of life throughout our season. Having two spaces gives us the ability to reach people who enjoy musicals as well as people who prefer newer, classic, and local, and experimental plays.” She also mentioned the new inclusion of ASL nights for those who are hard of hearing during the run of each Russell Hill Rogers production. Memberships for The Playhouse’s 2016-2017 Season are now currently available and include many perks including unrestricted seat selection and early reservation periods. There are two different types of membership you can choose from, and both range in price depending on how many vouchers desired. The memberships range anywhere from $125-$625. Migliaccio says that a membership is truly the most cost effective option for the avid theatregoer.
