Help Invent TEDxSanAntonio Women

I’ve been a fan of TED for several years. I’d like to say since the first time I saw a TED talk but I honestly can’t remember which one it was. I’ve watched so many motivating talks. Two that are most memorable are Brene Brown’s talk The Power of Vulnerability and Isabel Allende’s talk Tales of Passion (watch it below!).

Join the TEDxSanAntonio community as we host a TEDWomen 2013 Watch Party featuring a TEDWomen Invented Here Session at Geekdom on December 6, 2013.

What or who is TED and TEDx, you ask?

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.”

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. (TED.com)

TEDxSanAntonio since 2010

My friend Alicia Arenas spoke at the first TEDxSanAntonio event in 2010, Recognizing Glass Children. She gave an insight on what it is like for siblings of children with special needs. Our own Mayor Castro also spoke at that event: The Power of Education How It Changed My World. He shared his education experience and why he believes education is the ticket for San Antonio to compete in a global economy. I attended my first live TEDx event in 2011 in San Antonio. I heard so great ideas coming from local leaders. Each year the speakers are new, the ideas are just as powerful and this community grows.

Invent TEDxSanAntonio Women

This year, as a part of TEDWomen 2013, TEDxSanAntonio community will host a Watch Party featuring TEDWomen Invented Here Session at Geekdom on December 6, 2013. This is where I knew I wanted to help create this space here. I’m inviting you to join us.

In San Francisco for the first time, TEDWomen 2013 will channel the bootstrap spirit of Silicon Valley to celebrate invention in all its forms. Not just technology and things, but also solutions to poverty; approaches to peacemaking; expressions of art, and, at times, our own lives. More than 150 TEDx events around the world will take part, sharing the livestream and presenting local speakers around the theme “Invented Here.” (TED.com)

San Antonio will be a part of this global conversation. We are hosting this watch party to begin a conversation with women in San Antonio around new ideas, empowerment, problem-solving and leadership. It is time for women in San Antonio to gather, inspire each other and support new and current ideas to make our city even better.

In San Antonio, the TEDxSanAntonio community and I, personally, invite local women to join us for the Watch Party, enjoy refreshments and engage in this unique conversation.  This will be the beginning of TEDxSanAntonioWomen!
