The midterm election is here! There is a lot on the ballot on this election, and your community needs your voice. It can all get a little confusing, though, so we’re answering some of the most frequently asked voting questions. For more information, head to ilovesanantonio.org.
What am I voting on?
In the midterm election, you’ll choose representatives at the federal, state, and county level. That includes US Senate, Governor, State Legislature, Judges, and more. If you live in the San Antonio city limits, you’ll also see 3 proposed City Charter amendments on the ballot. See more about the propositions here. When and where can I vote?
Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th, but you can vote starting Monday, October 22nd! This is called early voting, and in addition to avoiding the Election Day lines, you can vote anywhere in Bexar County during early voting. Click here to see the dates, hours, and polling locations during early voting. On Election Day, polls are open 7 am – 7 pm, and you must vote at your precinct’s polling location. What do I need to bring to vote?
If you have a Texas or US government-issued photo identification, bring that. (It can be expired up to four years.) Click here to see all the forms of accepted photo ID. If you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID available, you can bring another form of identification and sign a verified declaration at your polling place.
While bringing your voter registration card may be helpful to poll workers, you do not need this to vote. It also does not take the place of your required identification.
What if my voter registration info doesn’t match my identification?
The address on your identification does NOT have to match your address on your voter registration information. If your name does not exactly match your name on your voter registration information, election officials will review your identification, and if your name is “substantially similar,” you’ll be allowed to vote (but required to submit an affidavit stating you are the same person on the official list of voters).
What if I can’t vote in person?
If you won’t be in Bexar County for Early Voting or Election Day; are 65 years or older; are disabled; or confined in jail but otherwise eligible to vote, you can vote early by mail. Applications must be received by October 26th. Click here to get an application. Mail-in ballots must be received by 7:00 pm on November 6th (if not postmarked) or received by 5:00 pm on November 7th if postmarked by 7:00 pm on November 6th.
I need a ride. How can I get to my polling location?
VIA is offering free rides on Election Day! Just show your voter registration card when you board. Lyft and Uber are also offering discounted or free rides on Election Day. Check the apps on November 6th for more details.
