Serving as the Volunteer Leader for SA2020 has been one of the most rewarding roles of my life. Over the last five months I have had an opportunity to engage, share, and serve in several projects with citizens of our great city. All of the volunteers I had the pleasure of laboring with were committed to making a real difference in the lives of others, all while resolving to reach our volunteer goal.

I have been fortunate enough to participate in thirteen projects resulting in 40 hours of service. So if you are keeping score, I have already accomplished my minimum goal of hours served for my Resolution, but there are still many more opportunities to improve communities. So this journey must continue.

I am often asked why am I so committed to improving the lives of others and communities. My answer is quite simple. I discovered my passion and purpose in life; to serve others. I believe Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best when he stated, “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Now Dr. King isn’t despising educational attainment, but instead his statement reveals that everyone can play a role in serving others and refining communities regardless of ones background, age, gender, and race.

I firmly believe that the vast majority of people in this world want to live in an environment that consists of caring and loving individuals. From my perspective, we just have too many people disconnected from their purpose. Being connected to your purpose will bring focus, passion, and responsibility into your life. Functioning in your purpose affords you an opportunity to make a difference. Imagine being able to play a role in shaping a better pathway for yourself and others. Well guess what, volunteering can grant you that fulfillment. There is no greater feeling than to be commended by others for your service in their life. Adding value to others and then having it reciprocated makes everyone a winner. This is the life I know we were all called to live and that is why my work of promoting the benefits of volunteerism must continue.

If you are already contributing to the lives of others through service, I sincerely thank you for joining the team. For the others who have yet to get involved, I want to encourage you to get in the game and join the fun. Uniting people from diverse backgrounds is never easy, but when a common goal is shared it becomes much simpler to achieve the mission.
