A leadership development training and matching program for nonprofit board service

What is The Board Game?

As part of the shared Community Vision, San Antonians envisioned a city that “fosters leaders across the community who collaborate to reach shared goals.” In 2019, SA2020 launched The Board Game to train Nonprofit Partners in board development, invite San Antonians to learn to successfully apply and serve on a nonprofit board, and ultimately help make local nonprofit boards more representative of the San Antonio community.

Through The Board Game, SA2020 will both train participating nonprofits in best practices for board development and individual community members in board service. At the end of the trainings, SA2020 will match participants to current board openings with Nonprofit Partners. By connecting talented San Antonians with the organizations that are serving the community, we know that we’ll move closer to San Antonio’s shared Community Vision.

2021 Program

The Board Game is for both community members interested in becoming nonprofit board members and Nonprofit Partners interested in board development. Choose the timeline and program details you’d like to see below.

1. Apply

During the application process, you’ll share your areas of expertise, which Community Results speak most to you, why you’re interested in serving on a nonprofit board, and your demographic information. The application is open now through Sunday, August 1 and includes a $25 non-refundable application fee. (Don’t let this deter you from applying—discounts are available!)

2. Register & Attend Training

SA2020 will invite successful applicants to a virtual training in September to learn how to successfully apply and serve on a nonprofit board. SA2020 will offer two cohort options. Participation in a cohort is required to receive your matches. 

Cohort I: September 11 & 18

Cohort II: September 14 & 21

Each cohort includes a 2.25-hour session on each day. Registration is at sliding scale ($65-$200).

3. Meet Your Matches

SA2020 will match you (as best we can) with nonprofit organizations whose board needs align with your areas of expertise. (See a list of participating organizations.) If you receive matches, leaders from those organizations will reach out after the trainings so that you can learn more about the organization, requirements of serving on their board, and board application process. If you both think it’s a good match, you’ll be ready to apply to serve on their board.

1. Complete the Board Survey

Nonprofit Partners interested in participating must complete a board survey to share info about their board, including the current demographic make up and areas of expertise you’re looking for.

2. Register & Attend Training

SA2020 will host a virtual training for Nonprofit Partners, offered on two different days. Participation in this training is required to receive matches.

September 1 & 2

The training will share best practices in board development, including how to advance racial equity.

3. Meet Your Matches

After the trainings, your organization will receive your matches. You can review their resumes and invite any who may be prospective board members to a short meeting to learn more about the organization, responsibilities of board service, and process to apply. If interested, matches are then expected to go through your organization’s typical application process to join your board.

FAQs for Prospective Board Members

While everyone is invited to apply, given the importance of representing the communities we serve, people of color (especially women and gender non-conforming people of color), people who live in City Council Districts 2-7, and folks under the age of 40 are particularly encouraged to apply.

You don’t need to have any board service experience to participate in The Board Game. Everyone is invited to join us for the trainings, and folks are matched to organizations based on their expertise, including professional and lived experiences.

Application Fee: Applicants must submit a $25 non-refundable application fee due with the application.  Please do not let this fee deter you from applying; email info@sa2020.org to request a discount.

Training Fee: Participants must submit a non-refundable training fee when registering for a training session. To make our events as accessible as possible, SA2020 offers three options:

  • The Sustainer level ticket ($125) covers the actual cost per attendee. This ticket is for folks who have the resources to cover this level, or their organization is purchasing or contributing to the cost of their registration.
  • The Connector level ticket ($65) is discounted for folks who are covering the ticket cost out of their own limited funds, including students, underemployed individuals, or those living on a fixed income.
  • The Multiplier level ticket ($200) makes the event more affordable for folks who need it by allowing SA2020 to offer the Connector-level ticket option.

The application will ask you about your areas of expertise, which Community Results speak most to you, why you’re interested in serving on a nonprofit board, and your demographic information. We ask for your demographics because we know organizations are stronger when their boards represent the communities they serve, and this information will help make San Antonio nonprofit boards more representative of the community.

The board service training will help you learn how to successfully apply and serve on a nonprofit board. We’ll guide you through the basic responsibilities of nonprofit board service, help you understand how to embed racial equity in your work, and share takeaways from nonprofit leadership about what makes a board member successful. We know board service might seem a little daunting or overwhelming, so we’ve designed this training to give you the tools and resources you need to serve successfully. The training is made up of 2 sessions and each session is 2.5 hours long. Participation in both sessions is required.

SA2020 will review participant applications and reported gaps on Nonprofit Partner boards. SA2020 will then match applicants to nonprofit organizations whose board needs align with their areas of expertise and demographics. Based on board needs, some folks might be matched with one great organization, while others might have up to 7 matches. You’ll receive your matches and some initial information about the organization at the end of the training.

After the training, leaders from organizations are asked to reach out to their matches to introduce themselves and share more about their board application process. You’ll learn more about the organization, requirements of serving on their board, board application process, and you can decide if it’s the right match for you.

Based on existing board needs, it’s possible that there won’t be a board opening for everyone this round. If we don’t have a match for you, we still encourage you to join us for the training and learn more about board service. SA2020 will then keep your application on file for the next year with the potential of matching you with a new SA2020 Partner or new board opening for the next year.

FAQs for Nonprofit Partners

The Board Game is limited to our Nonprofit Partners. If your organization isn’t yet an SA2020 Partner, we invite you to apply! SA2020 will accept new Nonprofit Partners successfully onboarded by Friday, June 25th to participate in The Board Game.

The training will share best practices in board development, including how to advance racial equity. This training is 2 hours and 15 minutes. Participation in this training is required in order to receive matches.

The Nonprofit Partner training will help organizations embed racial equity into their board development practices. SA2020 has found that longstanding change is more likely to occur when people across the hierarchy of an organization deepen their knowledge, learning, and commitment to racial equity at the same time and have a shared understanding of how to advance racial equity through nonprofit board service.

SA2020 requires the participation of the ED/CEO and a current Board member. We also welcome any other team member who serves as a Board liaison.

You will receive the resume for your matches, as well as their contact info. Organizations who receive matches are encouraged to review their resumes and invite any who may be prospective board members to a short meeting to learn more about the organization, responsibilities of board service, and process to apply. If interested, matches are then expected to go through your organization’s typical application process to join your board. We do ask that you communicate with all of your matches whether you decide to meet with them or not.

We can’t guarantee that every organization will have a match during The Board Game, but we hope the training will help you learn more about best practices for board development and recruitment outside of The Board Game and identify individuals for committee roles or other volunteer opportunities.

Yes. Participating Nonprofit Partners are required to complete a 2021 Board Survey. This survey will open on Monday, May 31st. We want to be sure to have your most up to date information.

There is no cost to Nonprofit Partners for the training or matching program in 2021.
