How Visitation House Ministries impacts San Antonio's shared Community Vision

Visitation House Ministries helps women with young children who are experiencing homelessness or near homelessness and other vulnerable women from the community. We provide housing, education support and life skills training. The goal is that participants leave with both the tools and the confidence to take the next step in their advancement, whether it is to take college classes, to get a job or a better job, or to be able to help their children. Their work in the program will ultimately empower them to make changes in their lives: to lift themselves out of poverty, and to provide a better quality of life for their families through education and employment. Over 33 years of experience has led us to develop a two generation approach because we know that the children will be the change agents ending generational cycles of homelessness and poverty. A key component for the children is the after-school tutoring program where each child receives approximately 4-6 hours a week of one-on-one tutoring, focusing on reading and math to help bring them up to grade level. The Visitation House Outreach Education Program, housed at our learning center is very much a “women’s space”, a place where both homeless women and other low-income women from the San Antonio community receive the opportunity and resources to pursue education goals that better prepare them for employment that pays a living wage. The center provides free, year-round, classes in GED preparation (English/Spanish), English as a Second Language, (ESL) computer skills training, college prep and college-level tutoring as well as academic and financial aid advisement. Classes are small, often given individually, and geared to the specific needs of the women, thus maximizing learning potential.
