Bihl Haus Arts (BHA), a community-based nonprofit, may be the only professional nonprofit art gallery on the premises of an affordable senior housing community in the United States. BHA’s mission, "Creating Community through the Arts," is founded on the belief that each person, when given opportunity, can achieve significant personal, social and cultural growth through the arts. The BHA gallery offers six exhibitions annually. More than 120 exhibitions to date have featured over 750 artists, 65% of whom have been women and/or Latinx artists. BHA also offers free weekly art classes, including all supplies, to adults over age 60 in its GO! Arts program and to military veterans with PTSD, MST (military sexual trauma) and depression in its Forward, Arts! program. BHA also sponsors and organizes the On & Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour, a creative place-making project in February each year that features over 70 artists in their live/work spaces, which promotes this historic San Antonio corridor as a cultural destination. In response to the pandemic, BHA retooled its education programs to offer virtual learning options for more than 400 participants. Currently, classes are offered in both virtual and in-person formats to address the needs and concerns of participants.
